Obviously it seems simple enough to throw some bottled water in your bag but if your bag sits idle for years can you trust it? If you live Up North where the temperatures frequently drop below freezing and you leave your bag in the vehicle overnight, you will have a surprise during the first thaw. Also bottled water alone is not a sustainable solution. You need to plan for the day after you drink the last drop. The Basic Bugout Bag includes the following (2) treatment methods and (2) storage containers:
- Sawyer Mini Filter w/ Bag - good for turning 100,000 gallons of questionable fresh water into drinkable water. Drink straight from the included pouch, use with the straw, attach directly to most bottles or as an inline bladder filter. You can clean/recharge the filter with a simple backflush using the same water you just cleaned. No better solution on the market for the weight.
- 2 Liter Water Bladder w/ insulated drinking tube (BPA free) - wide screw cap to easily fill and insulated tube keeps the water in the tube both cooler in the heat and slows freezing in the cold. Includes bite tube cover to keep it clean.
- Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Tablets (20) - Quick fill the bladder with 2L of water and drop 2 tablets into it, you're good to go in four hours. There are Iodine and Chlorine options on the market that treat in 20-30 mins but they don't kill as many bugs and have more complicated ratios. This water purifier has no aftertaste like other options and is effective against bacteria, viruses and cysts. I like the Keep it Simple Principle and am willing to wait 4 hours for that confidence. Use the Sawyer Mini Filter if you get thirsty during the four hour treatment period.
